Xa:ytem Longhouse – National Historic Site of Canada
The Xa:ytem Longhouse Interpretive Centre, found just east of Vancouver near the town of Mission, is home to British Columbia’s oldest known dwelling site. Xa:ytem is a 9000-year-old ancient Aboriginal village site that features a sacred transformer stone & one of BC’s oldest houses. Visit the interpretive centre to learn, interact & experience Sto:lo (“People of the River”) history, culture, archaeology & spirituality. Visitors can view the traditional cedar plank longhouse, an artisan centre, and two circular underground timber-lined dwellings known as pit houses, while also having the chance to attend workshops such as basket-making, drumming, and Salish weaving.
