Things to do in Prince George: Books & Company

bc bookstores

If you’re looking for things to do in Prince George this fall, we have the place for you. Why? It’s been a cool summer, and it seems likely autumn may start a little early this year. While for some of us in BC an early autumn also means early snowfall with the promise of skiing and snowboarding, for others autumn ushers in a season of rain, rain, and more rain, with little reason to go outside.

So, to help people prepare early for a damp fall, this week we’re profiling our favourite bookstores across the province. Last time it was the BC heritage and history Crown Bookstore in Victoria. This time we’d like to talk about…

Books & Company (Prince George)

Known by locals as “Prince George’s living room”, Books & Company is one of the businesses that are leading PG’s urban revival movement that is helping the northern city maintain a livable downtown.

As a result, this independent bookstore has become a true community hub, that, besides selling an amazing selection of books, also hosts book clubs and also invites community groups, volunteer organizations and anybody else interested in talking about what they do to schedule a talk.

UNBC professor Todd Whitcomb hosts Cafe Scientifique, events that act as a a program of public engagement in science giving attendees the opportunity to hear about innovative research and ideas, and also ask questions of experts. Each session begins with a 20-minute talk followed by an extensive discussion, including a question and answer period.

The PG Citizen also holds its public Q&A sessions at Books & Company

There’s also Friday night open mics, author readings, and a whole lot more. Check out their calendar to get all of the details. Also (Books & Company is not done yet!)…

Books & Company is one of Prince George’s biggest ticket outlets, and is the only place in town to get Theatre North West play tickets. There’s also tickets to Cinema CNC, Quantum Popcorn, Blues Underground and many, many, many (this is Books & Company, after all, right?) other local events!

The Prince George Bookstore has a lovingly-maintained blog, a vibrant Twitter feed, and a Facebook page that should not be missed.

While Prince George is a winter playground with plenty of opportunities to ski and get on a snow machine, Books & Company makes a great case for the pleasures of staying inside with a book.
